In the Studio: Lawrence McRae

I share my studio space in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood with some serious talent.  Among us are interior designers, photographers, event planners, a small marketing agency and the ceramic powerhouse couple Jill Rosenwald and Lawrence McRae.  I was passing by my favorite bowl this morning on my way in and it dawned on me that I’ve yet to mention Lawrence and his work here on the blog.

McRae’s pieces are made by hand, then carved by hand.  They are so perfect they look like they may have been stamped by a machine, but after watching him do this day in and day out, I assure you they are not.

They are both delicate and strong – I love how, in many of his pieces, the negative space as a whole creates shape itself.

I think my office desk may need one of these lamps. There are so many wonderful artisans in this neighborhood.  I remember coming over here as an art school student and touring the studios on Summer Street.  I’m so lucky I now have a space here of my own, which is totally a dream come true.
